“Every athlete wants to be better, but many don’t want to change.”

I think that applies to so very many people in so very many scenarios.

In fact, we all may be guilty of laziness sometimes.

So…just to help…here are 5 ways Mick Ukleja of Success Magazine says we can help ourselves to influence personal change:

1. Make peace with the uncomfortable (we won’t change until we’re comfortable being uncomfortable).

2. Let go of the past (it’s important to learn from it but not dwell on it. Remember that our best and brightest days lie ahead of us, not behind).

3. Focus more on what’s truly important (seek the bigger picture).

4. Invest in yourself (Thanks for always reading Mark’s Minute…it’s intended to help positively direct you in a morsel of positive thought).

5. Be open to feedback (Real help is invaluable, so be willing to accept it… it’s the unkind criticism that we should shun).

So...thanks for reading today…

Hope you know that I’m always rooting for YOUR success...and...I’m struggling every day right along with you trying to be the best person I can possibly be!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/62495742020-03-04T16:55:00-05:002020-09-19T03:44:01-04:00March 4, 2020 – Micro Habits and the Benefit for YOU
Not sure about YOU, but I constantly struggle with focused productivity, time management and self-imposed stress.

Some days just a little and other days…well…a lot.

How about you?

If that is you…the answer to our dilemma may be in better understanding and immediately implementing Micro Habits.

Micro Habits are self-imposed actions that require minimal motivation or effort to complete.

The principal is actually very simple…a Micro Habit can slowly help us create significant improvement and reward us with measurable results!

Micro Habits should work the same for YOU as they will for me.

The only decision is where to start.

I’ve been studying the benefits and the how to…so…take a look at the really good article I found

on Forbes.com that is safely attached to this email.

It will give YOU some answers and a better understanding on how to begin.

Let’s get to work on some Micro Habits that WILL make a difference…I’m beginning today!

Sometimes, it appears relentless…

It chases you, it finds you and sometimes it feels like it conquers you…

But…in truth,

“The absence of stress is death!”

So, let’s not go there…

Today…get on that horse and ride…

Ride like there’s no tomorrow…

Ride it like you own it…

YOU can conquer stress…I know you can and I’m rooting for your SUCCESS!!

I know I do…especially when the story is told well.

Somewhere recently, I even read that storytelling has earned its place as one of the most important traditions humans possess…I think that might be true.

We use stories to make sense of the world and to share that understanding with others.

Stories are the signal within all the noise and a good story is about something someone sees as interesting or important and it adds value to most any topic.

I LOVE telling stories and I use them every week in all my presentations.

So…here are my 7 Best Tips for Storytelling Success;

1. Make sure you know your audience before you tell that story

2. Be authentic – don’t tell someone else’s story (that’s called plagiarism and you’ll mess it up anyway!)

3. Be sparing with embellishments (but they CAN make the story better or funnier!)

4. Using big words won’t make you look smarter (in fact, it can make you appear arrogant)

5. If an 8 yr old can understand your story…you told it right

6. It’s just a conversation with lots of physical animation (unless it’s a sad story, more animation is better!)

7. Think it through BEFORE you tell it (good stories don’t offend people).

There you go…these may not be everything you need to know to become a famous storyteller, but they will take you a lot closer to storytelling stardom within your circle!

I think he's spot on, and you can connect with Rich and his wife Sarah by clicking on the link at the end of this week's message…I recommend them highly!!

Rich and Sarah wrote:

What's scarier than asking?

Not knowing…

Asking feels risky. It can unlock all types of information we’d prefer not to encounter.

Not knowing provides the illusion of safety. It’s really a trap.

Without asking, we become ensnared in the land of “NO”.

No understanding. No clarity. No apology. No reconciliation. No moving forward.

Skillful questions require courage and can unlock unlimited human potential.

This week, rather than accepting not knowing…ask:
• Why do you think that is?
• How did we end up here?
• What roles did we play?
• From your perspective, how can things improve?

Questions are some of the most valuable tools we possess.

Use them wisely…use them often.

The thing we fear, is the key to uncovering the solution we seek!

Amen Rich...

Harmony is that beautiful feeling of life flowing with focused energy and a controlled level of stress.

You may have even experienced harmony in what I accept as the 8 points of life;
1. Personal and family
2. Physical
3. Educational and Mental Health
4. Spiritual
5. Financial
6. Professional
7. Social
8. Community

Any one of these, out of control can be excruciatingly non-harmonious…and when you focus to much energy developing or improving one, the others can suffer miserably.

So…what to do?

Listen to that still small voice...!

Be honest with yourself (and your family) about the reality of your current situation.

If quality time needs to be an increased focus, then ponder how to make it more harmonious (and discuss it with your family and let them be a part of creating a harmonious solution).

I could write for days on each one of the 8 but I think you get the point.

As you say yes to one of the 8 areas, you say no to the others...so be cautious here.

Strive for Harmony…you’ll always be glad you did and the people most important to you will be

glad you did too!

So, what do you do when you’ve found yourself there?

Recent research says you should -
1. Take a walk
2. Find a quiet spot and meditate
3. Take a shower
4. Slow down a moment and clear all the noise to just think and listen
5. Pray or ponder

Whatever you choose, do one or several of things every day.

Doubt is something all mortals do, so unless you’ve found yourself beyond normal, join in with the rest of us!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/60936642020-01-01T20:55:00-05:002020-12-10T04:58:09-05:00Jan 1, 2020 - When You Wish Upon A Star
“When you wish upon a star,
Makes no difference who you are,
Anything your heart desires,
Will come to you…” (Jiminy Cricket-Pinocchio)

“I wish,
More than anything,
More than life,
More than jewels,
More than the moon…” (Into the Woods)

“I wish those days…could…come back once more,
Why did those days ev…ver have to go…” (Stevie Wonder)

“I wish I was little bit taller
I wish I was a baller
I wish I had a girl who looked good
So I could call her
I wish I had a rabbit in a hat with a bat
And a six four Impala…” (Skee-Lo)

“Star light, star bright
First star I see tonight.
I wish I may, I wish I might
Have the wish I wish tonight…” (Anonymous)

We wish. It’s a natural trait. We might look out at the world and wish that we had their beauty, or their talent, or their money, or their waist, or their hair.

We might wish that we were smarter, or more focused, or more spiritual, or a little more Masterful.

Actually, it’s good to wish…

Just put first things first. Begin by counting your blessings!

"Count your blessings, name them one by one..."

We often realize the miracles when we look back and see that many of our wishes actually did come true.

So, why not take step 2 which actually has 4 parts;

1. Before we build a masterpiece, we must design it – take action and begin.
2. What does success look like to you?
3. See the world as it could be, what your world will look like when you finish = You have to believe it before you will see it.
4. When you live by design, you can create the life you want, you are able to create a Masterpiece

It’s never too late to begin writing down your wishes.

It’s never too late to have faith in possibilities.

It’s never too late for miracles to take place in your life.

So…what’s stopping you…what’s holding you back?

Get to work and make those wishes of yours a reality!

My earlier than normal rise was caused by a thought that really struck me as important.

Actually, I wanted to roll back over and catch another hour of sleep…but I knew better…thinking…get up and write it down…right now!

So…here was the thought I scribbled that early morning;

“Sure, the future may be a little scary, but if I do my BEST work every day, the future will take care of itself!”

Now…If you’re a planner, goal setter and a realist…this thought IS important.

If you’re willing to do your BEST work every day…good things can’t help but happen.

You can’t stop them from happening.

It’s just the natural order of the Universe.

So…today…make sure you’re doing your BEST work.

You want those miracles and YOU deserve them!

With that thought in mind, right now is a really good time to begin a process of evaluation.

Evaluate your year.

Evaluate this past decade.

See your future…and…create your plan.

People often ask me...so here’s what I suggest to them is an effective way make big things happen:
1. Understand the real problem
2. Generate many possible solutions
3. Address the strengths and weaknesses, pro’s and con’s of each solution
4. Choose what you believe is the best solution and write it down
5. Create a plan (at least your first right step) and commit to it
6. Get to work and watch powerful things happen!

Fall is beautiful and my part of the world is cool and very colorful.

But more than anything, I so enjoy the wonder of a thankful heart.

And…we really have so much to be thankful for.

"When you open your eyes, open your heart and open your arms, thanksgiving has meaning."

So…this Thursday…let us say thanks…for all that we have.

Thanksgiving…what a blessing!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59671392019-11-20T14:44:25-05:002020-12-17T05:57:43-05:00Nov 20, 2019 – YOUR Imposter Syndrome
This week, I invested several days in a new way (at least for me) to provide more value to my clients by becoming certified as an EQ-I and EQ 360 provider and coach.

If you’ve never heard of it EQ-I, it’s a way to better understand your Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence is a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way you:
1. Perceive and express yourself
2. Develop and maintain social relationships
3. Cope with challenges
4. Use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way

Here’s just one of a whole bunch of things I found interesting…

Many people (leaders, employees and team members…including me) suffer from an emotional feeling called “imposter syndrome”.

Imposter Syndrome can be defined as “a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist despite evidence of success”.

Imposters suffer from chronic self doubt and a sense of intellectual fraudulence.

Do you ever feel that way?

I have and often do!

Now, I didn’t get certified to be your shrink…but…if that’s you, join me in trying (really trying) to overcome feeling that way.

You are smart, with talents and gifts that bless the world (even if it’s just a small part of the world that surrounds you).

So, keep doing what you are doing…YOU ARE making a positive difference!

Get on out there and keep going…help someone that really needs it…because you have the skills and you are not inadequate...you are not an imposter!

And...just so you'll know...I'm very proud of you!!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59671402019-11-13T12:45:00-05:002019-11-20T14:45:24-05:00Nov 13, 2019 – People Want “Special” not Ordinary
People want “brilliant”…not just “adequate”.

They want someone who is the “best at”…not one who is just “doing it”.

People put their TRUST in someone who is “knowledgeable, competent, gifted or talented”…not just “capable”.

Like it or not…people want “Special” not “ordinary”.

And…YOU are Spectacular (in so many ways), so get out there today and show the people “why”!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark

P.S. If you're not having a good week (or month) and "spectacular" seems a little to positive or a bit unreal, think again. YOU are a living and breathing miracle...you do way more right than you do wrong...and if you have the joy of loving or being loved, your life IS spectacular!!...so suck it up and get back in the game...love you, mean it...and not in a weird way!
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59671492019-11-06T12:50:00-05:002020-09-25T03:08:11-04:00Nov 6, 2020 – Strive for 5’s
People have always expected great service.

You’ve always wanted to deliver it.

But…today, we have instantaneous reviews.

If that doesn’t scare you a little bit, it should.

Any one, any time, every opinion…instantly.

Now, more than ever…strive for 5’s!

Earn them, then ask for them.

People are watching and the competition is tougher than ever.

To complete in today’s world…you need a 5 and I’m confident you deserve it!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59488972019-10-30T08:30:00-04:002020-09-12T01:55:23-04:00Oct 30, 2019 – 3 Things EVERY Human Being Wants
I suppose you could listen to the wisdom of Abraham Maslow…he was pretty smart.

I recan' you could chum up to the thoughts of Tony Robbins…he’s pretty famous.

I also accept that you could follow the research of the Huffington Post, Disney Institute, Inc. Magazine or Entrepeurpreneur.com.

But…today I’m asking YOU to receive what I have found true after more than 1200 classes or keynotes, way beyond 10,000 hours of preparation, and an abundance of experience connecting with thousands and thousands of people.

I have found that nearly everyone I have met is seeking 3 things…

HEALTH (mental and physical)
Sure, plenty of people want to lose weight (including me sometimes), but in my experience, people are seeking a level of health to function comfortably in the world that surrounds them. Tall or short, round or skinny, able or disabled, everybody I have met wants a sufficient quality of life to wake up and be active. If they have health, they’re blessed…no matter what extreme physical or mental challenge they are dealing with.

BEAUTY
I’ve found that people seek beauty on a much different level than what the media tells us beauty is. The people I have met just want family and friends to see their Unique Beauty on both the outside and the inside. YOU may see ME as unattractive, but what I really want every day is to be seen beautiful by someone that really matters to me.

MONEY
Most of the people I meet think it would be fun to be rich, but they also except that an overabundance of money could actually ruin them. Instead, what they seek is enough money to be comfortable…To live and to give! Now, that’s REAL wealth.

Do you accept this? Are you with me?

If you are…go find someone today that you can fill their deepest desires…

Encourage them…let them know how smart and how attractive they are…then…take them to dinner.

You’ll be glad you did and they will too!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59488982019-10-23T08:30:00-04:002020-02-07T08:28:27-05:00Oct 23, 2019 – 4 Questions People Ask About YOU
Today, it might benefit you to know that there are 4 questions people ask themselves when they first meet YOU;

1. Will this person treat me with respect?
2. Is this person listening to me?
3. Does this person appear to be competent and caring?
4. How can this person help me get what I'm seeking?

Now, I’m not trying to imply that you are self-absorbed, arrogant, or non-giving, but the fact remains that most people strive for a more comfortable life and they are leary of connecting with anyone who causes them stress or prevents them from achieving their personal goals.

So…the next time you’re trying to connect, influence or be recognized as Trustworthy, do this:

Be more conscious of the 4 questions and the world opens up to YOU…!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59488992019-10-16T08:30:00-04:002019-11-04T10:29:35-05:00October 16, 2019 – YOUR Core 4
I was talking with my grandson Lee this week about his new job with Chick fil a, and he was excited to teach me what’s he’s learned about customer service.

At least, he taught me the service philosophy of a very successful company as defined by a 15-year-old (which I thought was pretty wise and very perceptive).

Here’s what I learned as I listened to Lee’s wisdom…

Lee said…Pops…all businesses can succeed if they just work the Chick fil a Core 4.

1. Create eye contact (Lee called it Southern Hospitality)
2. Share a Smile (Lee said that’s the beginning of efficient service)

3. Speak with an Enthusiastic Tone (Lee said that’s how you create Raving Fans)
4. Stay Connected to make it Personal (Lee called it forming a relationship)

Lee may need to learn more about the importance of quality products, leadership, management and ongoing service, but I believe he’s now got a foundation for creating TRUST (at least in business).

The lesson though is that we can implement the Core 4 too.

In fact…we probably should.

And I think it applies equally to life and business!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59489202019-10-09T08:40:00-04:002019-11-04T10:37:13-05:00October 9, 2019 – Who Would Have Ever Thought
Have you ever had those moments when that still small internal voice quietly spoke to you and said…?

“Who would have ever thought?”

I bet you have, or at least I hope you have.

Thankfully, that voice comes to me too.

And it’s important, because when it does, it means I’m not taking life for granted.

To be more clear, here’s the “Who would have ever thought” moment I had yesterday:

Who would have ever thought I could have been so fortunate to meet and marry my nearly perfect wife Janice…we call her Gigi? (now for 41 years)

Who would have ever thought we could have 5 wonderful kids? (Blaine/Chase/Kyle/Taylor/Kerri)

Who would have ever thought our kids would make such wise choices in their spouses? (Janelle/Bonnie/Lauren/Gabbie/Dylan)

Who would have ever thought we’d have 8 of the most brilliant grandkids on the planet? (with more to come)

I could go on (and bore you further…sorry) because I had a 4-hour drive and these thoughts continued for more than an hour.

Many of the thoughts even reached to what I'm doing right now...the opportunity to communicate freely with so many people I have met and care about their happiness and success...that's you! (and I believe that with complete sincerity)

It nearly brought me to tears…but that is not the point.

The point is…

When we take the time to listen to that voice with the many “Who would have ever thought” messages, that’s when the richness of life grabs us and embraces us.

YOU deserve a big hug today too…

Why not take a moment right now to consider the blessings of your life.

Just begin with “who would have ever thought” (and keep it all positive).

Don’t take your rich life for granted.

You are here to be happy and you deserve all of it!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59187422019-10-02T17:30:00-04:002020-09-07T00:54:12-04:00October 2, 2019 – The Power in a Little Pad
Over the past couple of months, I’ve had a number of people ask the same interesting question…

“How in the world have you found the time to write 8 books over just a few years?”

Now…writing a book (or books) may not be of interest to you, but none the less, the answer to that question applies to your life right now too!

In fact, the answer can help you achieve things you may never have thought possible:

1. There is power in a little pad.

2. Surround yourself with mentors that can help you, encourage you and participate in whatever it is you are seeking (for me writing books, it was Don Greeson, James Malinchak and Zan Monroe).

3. Once you write something down in your little pad (which should be every day), review it and then take action on what you learned!

As an example, here are just a few things friends and new acquaintances have shared with me in the last couple of weeks that I would not have remembered if I had not immediately written them down in my little pad…and…I need to find a way to apply the principles right away.

“Some people are like a blister…they show up after the work is done!” David White

“The early bird may get the worm, but more often than not, the second mouse gets the cheese (ie…be persistent and learn from others mistakes)!” Jason Donahey

“Most worthwhile things in life require a marathon…not a sprint!” Blaine Given

“What matters most is what lasts.”

“Crisis will remind us of what matters the most.”

I’ve got a bunch of little pads full of thoughts and principles just like these that I've collected over the years.

You should probably carry a little pad around in your pocket too…you might be amazed at the

miracles that will happen for you (even if you never choose to write a book)!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59187892019-09-25T17:35:00-04:002019-10-07T19:31:12-04:00Sept 25, 2019 – Customer Service Vs Customer Focus
As I write this, Gigi and I are out in California spending some quality time with our grandson Peyton, son Taylor and daughter-in-law Gabbie.

We've really had a wonderful time which has included some memorable experiences…but…we were also reminded several times of how important TRUST is as it relates to dealing with customers.

And this time, we were the customer.

We experienced challenges with valet in San Diego, a front desk clerk in Anaheim, and the LA Dodgers entry staff (and the trip is not over, so there may still be more).

Now...I don’t think I’m difficult to get along with or that my expectations are too high (I rarely get accused of that)?

Maybe then…poor training is to blame or principles of maintaining exceptional customer courtesy is very very low?

But…none the less, it leads me to this week’s thought.

Customer Service is often thought of as a proactive process (what can we do to anticipate the needs of our customer), but actually it’s not just proactive…it’s also reactive (when something goes wrong, what can we do to repair the damage we have done to our customer).

If you’re trying to only be good…customer service might work and fit your bill.

But…if you’re striving for BEST…seek out ways to deliver on a Customer Focus.

Customer Focus is entirely proactive…it requires listening before, during and after the transaction.

When something goes sideways (and especially before it goes sideways), take some time to actually listen to your customer, then work together to find a reasonable solution to their problem.

In every California case, I was told what they would do (and they still did not deliver)…not what they could do…and what they would do was not vaguely what I knew they could do (in every case, they lost my business or will lose my future business along with any recommendations or referrals I can give...and that may be a lot).

If you're in the service business (and most everyone is), take some time to really listen to the challenges your customer is having or observe what they silently are experiencing and go to work solving the problems BEFORE they ever experience a bigger problem.

That's what having a Customer Focus is all about.

Maybe you could take a moment today to think about how you are punishing your customers for doing business with you?

Trust…it’s not just a concept…especially when it’s happening to YOU.

And that’s no way to build a business!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59187902019-09-18T17:35:00-04:002019-10-07T19:32:59-04:00Sept 18, 2019 – 5 Ways to Overcome Adversity
Trials...

No one is immune to them.

Sometimes…they come when we least need them.

And if you’re like me, you’d rather live without them…so…

What to do?

Here's my advice and 5 Ways To Help Overcome Adversity:

1. Have confidence that it won’t last = look back on your life. I’d wager nearly every trial you've had was just temporary…hang in there and you’ll figure out some solution that makes things better.

2. Try to keep a positive perspective = others have made it through it and YOU can too.

3. Schedule action = avoidance will only cause more suffering so any step forward will likely help ease your pain.

4. Ask for help = there is always some one that is skilled in your particular trial or at least some one who loves you enough to coach you off the ledge.

5. Honor the struggle = I get annoyed when someone says they are thankful for their trials (what’s wrong with them), but the truth is…trials are part of normal mortal growth. We don’t get better or smarter until we’re stretched. Stretching hurts, but it’s ultimately good for us!

I hope that helps a little and I hope you know I’m rooting for you if you are struggling with a trial right now…today!

Hang in there…I’ve never known things to not get better with some focus and time.

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59187922019-09-11T17:35:00-04:002019-10-07T19:34:58-04:00Sept 11, 2019 – Who Can YOU Encourage
Are you making an investment in others?

It’s really important!

Think about your life for a moment…

Aren’t you lucky to have had someone to help nudge and encourage you along?

You may have heard it said that;

Flatter me and I may not believe you,

Criticize me and I may not like you,

Ignore me and I may not forgive you,

But, encourage me and I will not forget you!

You can quote me on this…

“You might be amazed at what I can accomplish with just a little bit of encouragement!”

Go ahead and make an investment in someone today by encouraging them.

Both of you will benefit...I guarantee it!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark

P.S. Today’s a little tender because of the significance of our history. God Bless all those that serve us to keep us free and safe and for all those that respond at a moment’s notice when emergencies engulf us…we love and honor you today!
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59187932019-09-04T17:40:00-04:002019-10-07T19:36:46-04:00Sept 4, 2019 – YOU Being the Superstar
Sometimes, you may want to be THAT person.

The one that people notice, the one that people have to be with…but…

When reality sets in, we realize that we all CAN’T be the ONE.

To win, it actually takes support for any Superstar to shine.

It takes many people contributing, all doing their part on a high level to achieve.

Rather than focusing entirely on being the star, do your part and be a Valuable Contributor.

Be the go-to person in your position.

The one that everyone can count on, but doesn’t have to have the spot light.

That’s how you win and win more often.

You may not get the lime light, but in the long run, being a Valuable Contributor can be a lot more rewarding!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59187942019-08-28T17:40:00-04:002019-10-07T19:38:46-04:00August 28, 2019 – YOU and Decision Fatigue Ruining Your Day
Decision Fatigue refers to the deteriorating quality of decisions YOU make after a long day of decision making.

It’s caused by being forced to make so very many decisions over the course of your day.

And you likely know what I mean?

You wake up deciding whether you’re going to read, exercise or eat (and what), then head immediately into bathing, then what clothes to wear, then what time to leave, then whether you stop along the way, then which way to turn and on, and on, and on…

By the end of the day, you likely can’t even decide where to eat or what to eat for dinner and you get frustrated or angry just having to make that decision.

(What do you want to eat honey…oh, I don’t care…whatever you want!!!)

So then, the question lies deeply in…what to do to stop all the madness?

Here are 5 ways to overcome Decision Fatigue and boost YOUR will power:

1. Plan your daily decisions before you go to bed (things that get scheduled get done!).

2. Get really clear on your first thing first in the morning (then do it consistently).

3. Establish good habits that help you maintain your morning success and do them the same EVERY day (read, exercise, eat or whatever order works best for you).

4. Simplify (you don’t really need all those clothes and shoes in your closet anyway. They’re a luxury not a necessity!).

5. Pause 5 minutes at lunch or take a short break around lunch time to do #1 again for the afternoon (things have changed, so put out all those little fires and get back to accomplishing all the big hairy important stuff!).

There you go…I hope it helps you a bit?

I’m a little fatigued just trying to decide what to write in this one!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark

P.S. If you're not to tired, drop me a note or post a comment and let us know what works for you.
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59187952019-08-21T17:40:00-04:002019-10-07T19:40:36-04:00August 21, 2019 – The Principle of the Termite
Hurricanes and tornadoes get all the publicity, but termites actually do more damage.

Termites take little bitty bites, but boy do they take a lot of bites!

We too can take lots of little bitty bites that create incredible results.

Especially if we keep on biting day after day.

It’s not the loud and scary actions…it’s the quiet and consistent.

Get serious about being a more aggressive nibbler and watch more miracles happen.

I know you’ve got the appetite!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59187972019-08-14T17:45:00-04:002019-10-07T19:44:03-04:00August 14, 2019 – You and The Art of Personal Achievement
There are thousands of examples of what it takes to achieve.

Examples in leadership, selling, relationships, politics, sports…virtually every profession and every occupation.

But…I love the Wayne Gretzky mindset of achievement.

“I want that puck…you all go get your own puck!”

Simply put, Gretzky wanted to control his own destiny towards his definition of achievement.

Wayne said:

“If I have the puck, you can’t score. So, my best defense was always my offense…I wanted the puck!”

Today…decide what you want that will help you achieve, and go get your own puck.

I know YOU can do it just like Wayne did!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59188322019-08-07T17:45:00-04:002019-10-07T19:46:11-04:00August 7, 2019 – Imagining No One
Flying from Raleigh to Boston to Las Vegas recently for speaking events, I came across a movie called Imitation Game.

The 2014 movie is the story of Alan Turing.

Alan was born and lived in the UK from 1912 to 1954 and is now widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.

He was only quietly prominent until around 2009 for his significant contribution to breaking Germany’s Enigma secret code machine.

That contribution is credited for shortening World War II by more than two years and saving 14 million lives…AMAZING!

Here’s the reason I’m writing about him today.

Alan is quoted in the movie and in real life as saying:

“Sometimes, it is the people that no one imagines anything of, who do the things no one can imagine.”

So…if you ever feel like wall paper or that you are unnoticed, remember that it’s the contributions you are making, the gifts that you are sharing, and the efforts you put forth to make someone’s world a better place that really matter.

Even if you are never openly recognized or become famous to more than just a few, remember that life is worth living when you are making a difference, even just a little one.

Today…even better, right now…take a moment to stop and think about the people, the individual people you serve and have served.

Those efforts made a difference…I guarantee it…even though no one might have ever imagined!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/58482612019-07-31T14:40:00-04:002019-08-05T16:38:58-04:00July 31, 2019 – Do You Think YOU Can?
Are YOU optimistic?

Do you believe there is plenty of good in the world?

Do you accept the reality that great things should and will happen to YOU and for YOU?

My wife Gigi and I were talking with a friend last night and he reminded me of a wonderful poem written by Napoleon Hill.

I not only believe Napoleon’s words, but I try to live them everyday.

If you think you are beaten, you are
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you’d like to win, but think you can’t
It’s almost a certain you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost.
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will:
It’s all in his state of mind.

If you think you’re outclassed, you are.
You’ve got to think high to rise,
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before

You’ll ever win that prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the one who thinks he can.

True words…right?

Drop me a note or post your thoughts and let me know what YOU think.

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59188332019-07-24T17:50:00-04:002019-10-07T19:49:58-04:00July 24, 2019 – YOU and Your 5 Senses
Of course, you already know about five of your senses - touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing.

But you may not realize that we’re also taking in information through a wealth of other mechanisms.

If you enjoy staying balanced, it’s because proprioception tells you where your body is in space.

And don’t ignore your kinesthetic receptors.

They detect the stretching in your muscles and tendons, which help you keep track of your various body parts.

It’s also really cool to have receptors that keep track of how much oxygen is flowing through your arteries.

Amazing stuff isn’t it?

All in all, scientists have found that we actually have 21 senses, which help us with balance, pain and temperature.

Today…as you flow through life, remember what a joy it is to be a living miracle.

You already have everything YOU need to succeed…so…be happy.

Now…Go make some awesome things happen!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59188352019-07-17T17:55:00-04:002020-10-15T06:15:25-04:00July 17, 2019 – YOU Getting Along Better With The Troops
You may not be able to easily agree every time, but that doesn’t mean there has to be an argument.

Conflict…some people thrive on it, but you don’t have too!

In fact, finding best solutions and more workable ideas takes cooperation and open communication.

As a leader and manager, it’s your job to help team members learn how to disagree productively.

There needs to be some basic rules for keeping debates professional and on topic.

So…here are several of my

Positive Suggestions to Help Your Team (or family) Disagree More Productively:

• Be humble. Don’t lock in those heels. Respect everyone’s opinion and viewpoint. When you take the time to listen intently and receive the impression they could be right, it's best to open yourself to changing your mind and accepting a better idea.

• Stick to the facts. Stop interrupting and let people defend their ideas with clear, sound logic. Give them time to think it out and speak it out. Don’t let someone else win just because they can argue with rhetorical tactics or because they are being the loudest.

• Don’t make it so personal. Don’t ever allow name-calling, personal attacks, or questions like “How could you believe that, or How can you possibly think that would work?” Look for the best in your people (and family) and assume that everyone’s intentions are good. The more often you do this, the more often you can expect it to become that way. It’s called trust!

• Remember that you’re all on the same team. The goal of the conversation isn’t for one person to be proven right or to “win” the argument. The goal is to solve the problem at hand — together...as a team or as a family.

When it's appropriate, take the time to share these suggestions with your team and watch what happens.

The result will likely be that you accomplish more, in less time and with fewer conflicts.

Wouldn’t that be awesome!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59188362019-07-10T17:55:00-04:002020-10-16T03:56:09-04:00July 10, 2019 – YOU Taking Criticism
Hey [First Name],

How about you, are you good at it?

Are YOU good at taking criticism?

I’m not…I HATE messing up and I loathe being wrong!

Many times, I already know it…so someone taking a whack at me doesn’t help that much.

Here’s the problem though…

If you’re a leader, or a spouse, or a parent, or a coach, or a team member, or friend, or anyone doing anything…you will need a little constructive guidance from time to time.

One strategy would be to consider your response to criticism even when it’s well meant but poorly delivered.

Rather than getting mad, you might gently say…

“Let me repeat what you said, to make sure I understand you correctly.”

Or…you could respond with…

“Thank you for sharing your point of view. I’d like to consider it more and get back to you.”

You should also remember that criticism isn’t always delivered at you personally, as if you’re a miserable failure…but rather to help you be a little bit better next time.

No matter how you slice it, you’re not going to be awesome every time, so well-placed criticism can be a real gift.

If nothing else…think it over a little…and I’m not being critical of you!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59188372019-07-03T17:55:00-04:002019-10-07T19:57:53-04:00July 3, 2019 – Taking Responsibility
I love what Becky Craven said.

“Whenever we say except, but or however, we are saying it doesn’t apply to me.”

Read the quote again and ponder it for a second.

Have you ever said that?

I have, and I’m concerned that when I do, there are unforeseen consequences.

It’s important to take responsibility…for our self, for our actions, for our success (or lack

thereof).

So…here are 6 important steps towards taking responsibility more often:
1. Know who you want to be (then act accordingly)
2. Decide what you want out of life (work, health, relationships)
3. Don’t blame others for your decisions (stop the Blame Game)
4. Be ruthlessly honest with yourself (being hones doesn't mean being tough)
5. Good, Better, Best (never be satisfied with anything but BEST)
6. Pay attention and learn from the errors of other people (do some research if you have too)

Get committed to these steps…they won’t fail you.

That’s a promise…and I’ll take responsibility for saying it if I’m wrong!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59188392019-06-26T18:00:00-04:002019-10-07T20:00:47-04:00June 26, 2019 – One More Time
Have you failed at something lately and got so frustrated that you stopped?

Have you had something pressing on your mind, but fear stopped you in your tracks?

Have you put in some time and effort, then thought maybe it’s a bit too difficult?

Sometimes, failure is only a high wire to huge SUCCESS.

What would have happened when you were learning to walk if you had not tried one more time?

Again…then again…then again?

ONE MORE TIME!!

Today’s the day to get back on that wire.

If it was right for you to begin, it’s right for you to finish!

Go ahead…make it happen…continue the effort.

If you do, you might just be amazed at how it will change your future.

I know you can do it…you deserve to do it.

ONE MORE TIME!!

And I can’t wait to hear from you how it all worked out…so…let me know!

Hey [First Name],

Incredible leaders are not conformists, but paradigm shifters.

They move us in directions we may not have realized were significant until we arrived somewhere new.

And…we all know them and we all have benefited by them.

Some have very recognizable names.

They shift paradigms in all walks of life and in all professions.

Galileo, Winston Churchill, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr, George Washington, Joan of Arc, Mahatma Gandhi, Walt Disney, Michael Jordon, Billy Jean King, Duke Ellington, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, Zan Monroe.

No matter how many you put on your list, they changed your world.

And…YOU can change the world for someone else too!

Maybe not in a way that everyone recognizes.

But the world shifts for them none the less.

Each of us make a difference.

All of us change the world.

Maybe only to a child, or maybe to a family member, or maybe to a friend.

Today…be an incredible leader…shift someone’s paradigm.

Their world will be better because of YOU!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/59188612019-06-12T18:05:00-04:002019-10-07T20:05:19-04:00June 12, 2019 – YOU and The Death Zone
I’m not a mountain climber and you’ve likely never done that either…but…

Mountain climbers understand a principle that is important to all of us whether we climb or not.

Climbers fear something called the Death Zone.

Above 8000 meters (26,247 feet), there is not enough oxygen for their brain to function properly.

Beyond that height, you have an inability to think straight, you'll struggle making decisions and your mind and body is under unbearable stress.

Without proper preparation, many (likely most) will die and nearly all of the 200+ climbers that have not made it back from attemped climb up Mount Everest have died in the Death Zone.

We may not be climbers, but our lives are very similar.

Without preparation, we will not meet our summit and OUR summit is becoming all that we were meant to become.

Preparation comes through expanding our mind, living a healthy lifestyle, serving others and maintaining good habits.

No daily preparation…no summit!

But I’m confident that YOU will make it.

YOU will become all you were intended to become.

YOU will make a difference.

You CAN do it and the world will be the better for it.

Daily preparation…

Because today is a great day to keep climbing!

People often think that they are not intuitive, but that’s not really correct.

We each were born with an internal system to hear, feel, know and sometimes warn.

And…we have a natural access to that still small voice.

Some would call it their gut feeling but I’d call it something else!

Simply put, if you’re feeling good and things are working out, and you’re in the flow…you’ll hear

that voice telling you to continue with whatever you are doing.

Conversely, if you’re stuck, things are difficult, you feel bad or you’re in a rut…your intuition, your gut, the Spirit (that voice) is indicating a change of course.

Listen to the voice.

Follow its promptings.

When you’re doing right or when you’re doing wrong and you hear that voice…listen.

Mahatma Gandhi said it aptly this way:
“What is truth? A difficult question; but I have solved it for myself by saying that it is what the voice within tells you.”

“There’s no use trying. One can’t believe impossible things.”

The Queen replied:

“I daresay you haven’t had much practice. When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a

day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Maybe it’s time for you to take a chance and come up with some new possibilities that, to others might seem impossible!

I read in a wonderful book by Lynn A. Robinson that Shunryu Suzuki, a Japanese Zen Priest once said:

“In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities; in the expert’s mind, there are few.”

This is YOUR week to take some chances…go ahead…you’ve got more to lose than you realize!

You may lack knowledge…but add confidence and you’ll look like YOU know.

You may be short on skills…but add confidence and YOU will appear to be a pro.

You may be in a heavy fog…but adding confidence will give YOU clarity enough to see.

“You can’t achieve a million-dollar dream with a $20 an hour work ethic!”

And your dream may not actually be in dollars at all.

Your dream might be about family or influence or contribution or service or love.

But none the less…

“A little bit of effort and a little bit of action will not get you BIG results!”

Take a moment today and look internally at your effort, your skills, your desire and your habits.

Here’s 10 things I think mine includes;
1. A day long focus on gratitude
2. Laughing really hard at least one time...you know...the kind where you blow the liquid you're drinking out of your nose and it's embarrasing! (and I mean laughing at something, not some body)
3. Lifting someone up
4. Making progress on a worthy goal
5. Being patient…yet persistent
6. Learning something new
7. Appreciating something beautiful
8. Nurturing a relationship
9. Seeing something or experiencing something that moves me to tears (just a little)
10. Offering a helping hand to someone who really needs it

It’s difficult to experience each of these every day, but when I do…it’s PERFECT…how about YOU?!

You always get to make your own choice.

But…

You never ever get to choose the consequence.

And…there will always be consequences.

Some to your liking…some…not so much.

When ever possible (and it’s always possible) …make good choices.

Some seek money.

Some seek deeper relationships.

Some seek more time.

Some seek better health.

Some seek eternal bliss.

But…no matter what you are seeking as your current definition of success, we each have one thing in common that attracts us to that end result.

Successful people TALK about what they WANT.

Unsuccessful people TALK about what they DON'T WANT.

There’s a well repeated phrase that describes this philosophy…

“What you focus on expands.”

So…the important questions is;

What are you most often talking about...(what are you focusing on...is it positive or the negative)?

And, the answer to that question will make all the difference!!
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/57308092019-04-17T12:35:00-04:002019-04-24T14:33:03-04:00April 17, 2019 – YOU Doing “A” Work
I said it in March and received so many emails that I need to repeat it again...yet, another way.

When you’re really really focused, you’re only a short step away from creating the SUCCESS you are seeking.

That’s why I believe...

Every day is an “A” day until you no longer do “A” work!

Get focused, strive to stay focused and do "A" work.

I guarantee it will make your today and all of your tomorrow’s!

Several years ago, Brian shared his thoughts about what he believes are the 7 Qualities of Leadership.

Here’s what he believes every leader should possess:

1. Vision = a leader has strategic intent and purpose
2. Courage = a leader just goes for it
3. Integrity = a leader is honest and builds trust at all costs
4. Commitment = a leader is “all in”
5. Responsible = a leader never blames but accepts responsibility
6. Concentration = a leader is focused and has good habits
7. Excellence = a leader recognizes that “good enough” rarely is

If I had read these thoughts prior to writing my book Trust Based Leadership – Proven ways to Stop Managing and Start Leading, I would have included his thoughts.

I believe Brian is right…if we only had more leaders today that met these qualities.

And...You and I need all of them too!

Social Mobility is the movement of individuals, families, households, or other categories of people within or between social strata in a society.

Specifically, my interest was focused on how some people move up from one socio-economic category to the next category.

To be a little clearer, there are 5 socio-economic categories in the United States;

Upper Class
Upper Middle Class
Middle Class
Lower Middle Class
Lower Class

My question then was…

What most predicts financial SUCCESS in America?

How is it that some people move from one class to the next and others don’t?

After much reading and pondering, here is my simple 4 sentence discovery:

1. Successful people have a long-term perspective (not the right now...the I WANT, but the I WILL)
2. Everything counts (Success comes from focusing on details – the small stuff)
3. 10% will and 90% won’t (and that is being very generous)
4. Successful people take ACTION (they don’t wait…they do!)

Achieving significant levels of success is actually not that difficult.

Those that passionately and enthusiastically seek it will find it, and when they do it honestly and ethically, most will continue to maintain it.

And Also...YOU get to define what SUCCESS is for YOU…not what the world thinks it is!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/57066462019-03-27T07:55:00-04:002019-04-04T09:53:41-04:00March 27, 2019 – YOU Being in the Zone
You’ve been there.

Maybe not every day, but hopefully really often!

When you’re in the Zone…you’re performing at “Peak Performance”.

I believe every day can be an “A” Day…a “Peak Performance” day…an in the Zone day.

And…you can stay in the Zone until you choose to no longer do “A” work.

Get in the Zone…always do “A” work.

It’s a choice!

You’re only one step away from “Peak Performance”.

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/57066472019-03-20T07:55:00-04:002019-04-04T09:54:35-04:00March 20, 2019 – Living Your Life in Crescendo
cre·scen·do /krəˈSHenˌdō/
noun
1. the loudest point reached in a gradually increasing sound.
"the port engine's sound rose to a crescendo"
2. the highest point reached in a progressive increase of intensity.
"the hysteria reached a crescendo around the spring festival"

This weekend, Gigi and I were in Salt Lake City visiting with our wonderful son Chase and his awesome wife Bonnie, and we scheduled time on Sunday morning to go see Music and the Spoken Word at the famous Tabernacle on Temple Square.

I was pretty moved by the experience and especially touched by the theme of this week’s broadcast.

Living a Life of Crescendo.

To me, that means acting and learning and creating and moving and serving and giving and being and intentionally living in such a way that our focus is always on becoming OUR best.

A little better…every day in every way!

In bigger terms… “When we take our last breath, will we have reached our crescendo”?

I’ve thought about that for several days now and wonder if I’m doing enough to live my life in crescendo?

How about you?

And…what are we doing right now to make the world a little bit better place to live…helping others reach their crescendo?

That may sound like a lot to think about or maybe it’s even asking too much…but…I don’t think so.

One small step, that’s all it takes.

Just like a baby learning to walk.

If we do…our lives, the lives of our families, the lives of those we serve and our small piece of the world will be a better place, and the world will crescendo.

Now…go work on today’s crescendo…I know you can do it and I’m going to do it too!!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/57066482019-03-13T07:55:00-04:002019-04-04T09:55:39-04:00March 13, 2019 – Just How YOU Are Like A Magnet
You already know this…but…a magnet is an object that produces a magnetic field.

This magnetic field is invisible, but it’s responsible for the most notable property of a magnet:

A force that pulls or pushes on other objects.

Both you and I have similarities to magnets and our field is also invisible.

In other words, we attract or repel objects (the objects being human).

The rule for magnets is that like poles repel each other and unlike poles attract each other.

The rule for humans is opposite…like attracts and unlike repels.

The question is…which do you do…invisibly?

Are you magnetic or repulsive?

Jack Canfield gave credit to his wife a couple summers ago when he said to me…

“We’ll achieve success by being more interested than trying so hard to be interesting.”

Well said, Inga!

That invisible magnetic field works equally as well in many areas of our life.

In sales, don’t be icky. Pushy salespeople push people away.

Sincere givers always attract.

An obnoxious leader repels most any potential follower.

Be attractive. Always be attractive. In everything in every way…intentionally.

"The more attractive you are, the more success, happiness and joy will be attracted to YOU!" (and you can quote me on that!!)

It’s been out long enough now that you can buy it used (if you’re tight like me).

Maybe you can even find it at your local library (if free sounds better).

Written by Lynn A. Robinson, the title is “Trust Your Gut – How the Power of Intuition Can Grow Your Business.”

Here’s one interesting point (of many) Lynn makes that I’d like to share:

We make hundreds of decisions every day.

Some small.

Some big.

Some end up life changing.

When you are up against the life changing ones…
1. Don’t put it off
2. Remember…No decision is final
3. Trust your gut

I’ve always felt that this simple 3 step principle is true.

It’s been proven over and over in my life and for many of the people I love and observe.

So…the next time you’re making that huge decision…trust your gut…more often than not, you’ll be right!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/56686762019-02-27T13:50:00-05:002020-12-22T01:28:28-05:00February 27, 2019 – OUR Habit of Hesitation
You hesitate, I hesitate, we all hesitate.

Sometimes we need to hesitate.

But…most of the time, we shouldn’t.

So…I was asking myself a couple days ago…myself…why do I hesitate?

Here are my 10 unscientific reasons why I believe we can’t punch our way through hesitation;
1. We’re afraid
2. We lack confidence in our decision
3. We’re not uncomfortable enough yet to change
4. We feel overwhelmed
5. We’re overanalyzing
6. We’re listening to several other conflicting opinions
7. We’re not trusting that still small voice
8. We’re being stubborn
9. We actually don’t have enough quality information...yet
10. It’s just not important enough for us to make a decision right now

And…which one do I think is the most dangerous?

Number 3…We’re not uncomfortable enough yet to change.

When we get uncomfortable enough being uncomfortable, we’ll no longer hesitate and we WILL change. We will take action!

Get a lot uncomfortable and miracles will happen…so why not get a little uncomfortable today?

It’s only your future!

We have the power to think, to love, to create, to imagine and to plan.

But our greatest power might just be the power to choose.

Wherever you are today, you're there because you made choices that lead you there.

That may feel a little harsh, but it’s true…

We also get to choose our habits, we get to choose how we spend our time, we get to choose how we’ll react, and we get to choose our attitude.

On occasion, we are forced to respond to the bad things that come our way.

But…only YOU get to choose whether you’re going to react with a negative attitude or press forward with positivity.

Today…choose good.

Today…choose right.

Today…choose well…it will make all the difference in your tomorrow!

Mike didn’t though…

Rece Davis, an outstanding commentator and in my mind the new Bob Costas said it too.

“Sometimes as a leader, you lose confidence.”

But the miracle happened none the less even though I was asleep and miss it.

After the game, here’s what Zion said Coach K said in the huddle…

“I don’t coach losers…we have not played well, but there’s time left so let’s get back in this thing!”

Sometimes you may think the game is over, but it’s not over.

As a leader, you have to talk your way back into it…you have to walk your way back into it.

When you doubt, you can’t let it show.

Reach deep and find YOUR winning face…then get back in the game.

You’re a winner too…you ALWAYS have been.

When things aren’t going your way, find YOUR winning face.

Then…get back in the game.

More often than not, you’ll be amazed at the results!

Wow…now that’s a lot of Snapple!!

Think of it…$6,500,000,000.

Imagine what that much money invested differently could have accomplished?

So many positive things!

I bet 0 on the Superbowl, and you may or may not have also…but…we are ALL betting on something.

We’re betting that today will be a productive day.

We’re betting that our health will be good enough to continue functioning at a respectable level.

We’re betting that we’ll be able to do what’s necessary in order to purchase or maintain some cool material possessions.

We’re betting that our families will continue to love us in spite of our imperfections.

We’re betting that when we show up, we’ll have a job and somebody will appreciate our efforts.

We’re betting that when we’re gone, somebody will miss us.

We’re betting…we’re all betting.

I’m a gambler too, and just like you, the key to winning at betting is to bet on sure things.

You won’t have a productive day if you bet that goal setting, organization and time management don’t work.

You won’t have decent health if you bet that you can eat and drink anything you want, anytime you want.

You won’t have cool stuff if bet that hard work is a waste.

You won’t have a family that loves you if you bet that GIVING love first doesn’t matter.

You won’t have a job if you don’t produce more than what you cost.

You won’t be remembered if you don’t do memorable things…but…

You ALWAYS win when you bet on SURE things.

So…bet a lot and bet BIG…just bet on the obviously SURE thing!

The dividends will be worth billions in dollars or sense!

Do you have mentors that help you perform at a high level?

How effective are your committees?

More often than you’d like, does game time become blame time?

OK…blame time is pretty harsh. I should probably say, are you always prepared for peak performance during game time?

Whether you’re a leader, a manager, a salesperson or a servant, it nearly always takes more than just you alone to perform at your highest level.

It’s normal and expected that you would perform at a high level, so surround yourself with people that help you prepare and perform.

So…what’s the right amount?

Google would say not more than a two-pizza group!

For me, it’s more like one.

I enjoy getting my mentors and mastermind team together, brain storm, create action plans, practice, try out ideas and eat a pizza.

Do it regularly, and terrific things happen.

Success is a byproduct of organization and focus.

Everything?

Think about it for a moment.

What value does your family name bring to your community, whether large of small?

Does it remind people of good?

Does it remind people of generous?

Does it remind people of giving?

I'm reminded of this everytime with my children and I know my parents felt the same when they were raising me.

Gigi and I have worked very hard to instill in our children (and now our grandchildren) the importance of carrying on the Given name in a positive, generous and giving way.

I know you feel the same about your name.

Everyday and at every moment, let us not forget the importance of a good name.

It’s the continued legacy of our forefathers and the legacy we will leave for all those that follow us!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/56134132019-01-16T21:10:00-05:002019-01-25T23:09:53-05:00January 16, 2019 – Putting Your Fingers on the Right Keys?
Several weeks ago, I was at church in a foreign land (well…it was just Myrtle Beach, but that’s pretty foreign to me).

As the organist was finishing her prelude music, she slid slightly to the right on the organ bench which accidently moved her fingers to a whole new set of keys.

It didn’t take but 2 beats for her to adjust and correct her fingers, but for a brief moment, those new and different keys created a sound that startled most everyone in the chapel.

It was both unexpected and amusing (not laugh out loud amusing and certainly not laugh at her amusing, and we all knew she was terribly embarrassed), but to me it was interesting in how a simple act can change the entire meaning.

Our lives are just like that.

Slight changes can make significant differences.

Make a slight change, ever so positive, and your relationships can improve.

Make a slight change, ever so negative, and you can lose your job.

Make a slight change, ever so positive, and can win a gold medal.

Make a slight change, ever so negative, and you can drive off a cliff.

The key then is to make those slight but significant changes that will benefit you the most.

Today, take a few minutes and decide where to move your fingers.

That slight change will change your life!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/56134142019-01-02T21:15:00-05:002019-01-25T23:11:55-05:00January 2, 2019 – Building YOUR Miracle House
Have you seen the pictures of Florida’s Mexico Beach Miracle House (this one was from Johnny Milano for the NY Times)?

Take a few minutes, click over to Google and look up a couple more of the pictures.

There are so many principles to be learned from this owner’s example of preparation.

1. Plan and prepare for the worst because it may actually happen. When you plan and prepare, you survive.

2. Cutting corners or just living by the minimum requirements can cost you in the long run (why do we insist on being satisfied with the average or any standard expectation).

3. Surround yourself with people that are smarter than you, even if it’s just dumb luck (the property owners behind the miracle house may have complained prior to the storm because they lost their view of the ocean, but how do you think they feel now?)

When the world around you takes an unexpected turn, preparing well will be your rope.

Grab the rope now while you can…you’ll always be glad you did...!

Whining and crying about how life isn’t fair.

If that’s you…STOP IT…the world backs winners.

The best question might then be…How to be a winner more often?

Here’s one way…choose to embrace a “Now What” mindset.

Something bad has happened…Now What?

Things don’t go your way…Now What?

Fall flat on your face…Now What?

Cry for a while if you must…it clears the heart.

Sulk for a while if you need…it gives you time to warm your brain.

But…sooner than later, get to the “Now What” question.

Bad is never good until you make it good…so.

Get to it…say it with me…Now What?

Most everyone is backing you when you’re striving be a winner!

Just think about it…Now What?

You can do it…today…right now…you’ll eventually come out winning and the world will be cheering for you!

Grind more than the rest of the office.

Grind more than the rest of the team.

Grind more than the competition.

Grind more than the rest of everyone else you know.

In fact…don’t even expect to win without grinding.

People say that life is a grind.

Not true…actually

Losing is the real grind…!

So, get to it…better to grind out it now and reap the benefits of your grind!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/55407182018-12-05T12:04:47-05:002021-01-04T10:54:08-05:00December 5, 2018 – Achieving Sufficient Gain in YOUR Life
You can achieve your own definition of life GAIN when three things happen;

1. You schedule it – "things that get scheduled get done", so scheduling specific things that create momentum will guarantee gain.

2. You protect and defend it – just like a goalie protecting a goal, if you don’t get tough on protecting and defending your time, other people will fill your schedule for you with what THEY think is important, increasing their gain and reducing your own.

3. You learn to delegate – go back and read last week’s Mark’s Minute on delegating. If you want to achieve new levels of gain, you’ll need to get better at delegating.

"Gain control, gain a better life"…it’s YOUR choice and YOUR life!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/55313992018-11-28T20:40:00-05:002018-11-28T22:45:18-05:00November 28, 2018 – YOU Delegating Intelligently
There’s a big difference between delegating and dumping.

And…there’s two great reasons for delegating;
1. To save you valuable time
2. To achieve improved quality or better results

In order to delegate wisely, begin by asking yourself these questions;
1. Is there someone else more available than I am?
2. Is there someone else more talented, gifted or skilled?
3. How important is quality and if not, could someone else perform at an adequate level?
4. What’s the economic cost of me doing it rather than someone else?
5. Is there something else I could be doing with this time that would be MORE profitable or productive?

We all need to delegate sometime, but…

The key is to do it wisely and intelligently, with the goal of increasing production and/or reducing mental stress.

We’ll talk later…right now, I need to go delegate the things that would make me more productive or more profitable!

Hopefully, no time soon, but now’s the time to take some positive action.

Think about it for a moment.

What are YOUR ideal words for that tombstone?

Lifetime Giver?

Best Friend?

Always Trustworthy?

Forever Loyal?

Or…

Big Gambler?

Self-Absorbed?

Gifted Loser?

If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.” — Nora Roberts

One of the joys of mortal life is that we alone get to define SUCCESS.

It’s not what your parents thought, or your sister said, or your neighbor declared, or your friend spouted off at you.

All that counts is YOU…YOU alone get to choose.

So…decide what you want, write it down and get started.

Get started today.

If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it (and you’ll regret it).

If you don’t ask for help (even being willing to pay for it), the answer will always be no.

If you don’t step forward (that scary first step toward success), you’ll always be in the same place.

I’m rooting for you!

I know you can do it!!

Even if it’s a complete reinvention…now’s the time to get started.

Today….not tomorrow…TODAY!!!

You CAN do it…!!!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/55010042018-10-31T20:10:00-04:002018-11-05T22:09:27-05:00October 31, 2018 – YOUR Increased Success Begins with Trust
Success begins with trust and ends when there is no trust, yet, there are simple trust building habits that guarantee success regardless of personality, experience, or market conditions.

Here’s 3 tips for building more Trust.

1. Social media and electronic communication may be easy, but humans (and your pets) crave hugs and handshakes. Invest more quality time in face to face interaction and timely phone calls and you're guaranteed to increase trust.

2. There's scientific proof that shows good listening skills are far more productive than just hearing. You can hear what I say, but are you really listening to what I mean? Steven Covey expressed it well by sharing "Seek first to understand, then to be understood." Learning to listen is a powerful and fast way to build and maintain trust, and you should always remember that “listen” and “silent” are spelled with the same letters!

3. You can never say “thank you” enough. A well-timed, sincere thank-you builds trust and guarantees positive results. Today, seek to find 25 opportunities to express a sincere thank-you and you'll enrich your relationships with this new trust-building habit.

There is nothing difficult about any of these simple principles, so why not try them today?

You’ll be glad you did…!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep Building Trust...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/55010052018-10-17T20:10:00-04:002018-11-05T22:12:53-05:00October 17, 2018 – Training is ALWAYS Worthwhile
Did you read anything valuable early this morning?

I mean, something other than just Mark’s Minute?

When you invest in yourself, you always win!

Read something new every morning.

Watch a Ted Talk or a segment of the Genius Network, take a short class, listen to a podcast,

download something more than a funny video on Facebook or YouTube.

Training is always worthwhile.

It’s amazing how small investments of time over and over expand your mind and help you grow.

You’ll never lose when you schedule daily training.

Why not take 10 more minutes and do it right now!!

If you did not read it, take another few minutes and read it (but not until you have read this week’s)!

Now then…are you doing it?

Are you finding ways to reduce YOUR stress levels?

Here are 5 more common stress causers for most of the people you know:

#6 – Large Looming Tasks = If you’re feeling exhausted just thinking about that big project, or supersized event, or even the daily activities of life, it’s time you break down that elephant sized, mind blowing, overwhelming challenge into smaller achievable chunks. With just a little focus, you can think through the steps necessary to get it all done without having a stroke, and when you break that large looming task into smaller pieces, you’ll realize some of it should be delegated.

#7 – Interruptions = A European study showed that when you allow a distraction during your “mental flow”, it takes 23 minutes to return back to that same focus. You’ve got to kindly say NO to many of those annoying interruptions. Stop taking that unplanned call and stop saying yes to that “have you got a minute” question.

#8 – Multiple Stresses at the Same Time = Avoid procrastinating the inevitable. That long list of tasks become uncompleted tasks when you let them build up. My good friend, Mike Selvaggio taught me that when something arises that can be taken care of in 2 minutes or less, do it right then. That’s great advice!

#9 – Chatty People When You’re Busy = Tell them the truth! Now is not a good time but you do want to talk…then schedule a time when you can be more focused and attentive to their story.

#10 – Being Late = You already know what to do here. It's so obvious…just allow yourself more time! Whatever amount of time you think it will take to get there, add 10%. When you do, you’ll be on time way more often and both you and everyone else will be less stressed!

So, there they are…the 10 most common stress points in our lives.

How will YOU deal with them?

Smiles, have a GREAT week and keep building TRUST...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/54634732018-09-26T11:35:00-04:002018-10-10T13:33:42-04:00Sept 26, 2018 – Eliminating the Top 10 Sources of Stress – part 1
We can’t avoid it…we all get stressed.

But stress doesn’t have to completely stress us out!

An important step to taking charge of your life is to recognize the causes of your stress, then take action controlling them so they don’t control you.

And since you are likely already experiencing stress, you’ll probably recognize the 10 most common sources of stress.

I’ll share the first five this week and the second five next week.

Let’s get started…

#1 – Deadlines = we all have them, so to reduce your stress level, you’ll need to plan for them. It starts by doing a better job of planning out your day. You can do that the first 60 minutes of each day or maybe at night before you go to bed. Schedule for those deadlines, because “things that get scheduled get done”. Plan clearly and those deadlines won’t push you off the cliff quite as often as they currently do.

#2 – Lingering Tasks = “To Do” Lists work here. Do a more efficient job of writing your to do lists and those lingering tasks won’t drive you insane!

#3 – Tasks YOU Shouldn’t Be Doing At All = delegate more or just say no!

#4 – Multitasking = No matter what you believe, science shows that your brain can’t multi-task…so…do 1 job at a time and you’ll do it well.

#5 – Your Messy Environment = It may sting a little, but it’s likely true that most everyone you know needs to tidy up a little. A messy environment creates messy distractions and a messy mindset.

So, don’t be stressed…that’s all for now.

Get to work on these and I’ll share part 2 next week.

Time flies when you’re free.

Free to THINK…

Free to ROAM…

Free to SERVE…

Free to SUCCEED...!

Boy…some days….I sure do take freedom for granted.

But yesterday, I didn’t…I thought about it a lot…and…I even got a little teary eyed for all those special individuals that lost their lives…each unique in their own way.

Some…gave with surprise and fear.

Others…charging headfirst into the fray, freely giving everything they had to offer.

Life changing wasn’t it?

Even for those millions of us that weren’t physically there.

But…for this day and for all our lives, the lives of our children, and for generations to come….

Let FREEDOM Ring!

Even if you’re not trying, it’s easy to be lead right into IT.

The “IT” I’m writing about today is…drum roll…The Negative.

“IT” is all around us and the world is filled with IT.

Just watch the news, read the online headlines, or listen to most of the people you know.

But...the key to happy thoughts and happy lives is to steer away from IT.

Somehow, we need to find the positive!

Recently, I discovered a wonderful Navajo Prayer that’s worth sharing…

Beauty before me,
Beauty behind me,
Beauty to my left,
Beauty to my right,
Beauty below me,
Beauty above me,
Beauty within me.

Happy thoughts and happy lives come when we accept this IT and live IT…!

I know you YOU can do this IT today...!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/54091962018-08-29T09:45:00-04:002018-08-31T11:44:02-04:00August 29, 2018 – Dealing with YOUR Impatience
The beauty of an escalator is that you can see your progress.

People get frustrated waiting for an elevator because they can’t easily see where it’s been or where it’s going.

Your clients, your employees, your staff, your spouse and your children are the same.

When they can’t see where you’re going or where you’ve been they can get a little frustrated.

How many times have you heard a child ask “are we there yet”?

So…be an escalator.

Be open…be moving…be progressing...clearly describe your vision.

Show your people where you’ve been and where you’re going and the impatient will become more patient.

Think about how you can do that, then begin today…I’ll wager you’ll see some differences right in front of your very eyes!

There’s a lot we have to do all by ourselves…but…

You won’t get very far trying to do anything of significance all by yourself.

That leads to a last of questions we should be asking ourselves…
1. Am I hanging out with people that help me be and become my best?
2. Do I have mentors and friends that keep me performing at my highest level?
3. Do I have a coach? No one gets to the top of the podium without a coach!
4. Do I evaluate my daily performance and make adjustments?
5. Am I regularly stretching myself with new education and new opportunities?

If you take the time to look at your past, you’ll recognize that it was when you were open to the deepest levels of assistance that you grew the most.

Maybe it’s time to get back to those levels again and scale some new mountains.

Go ahead…you can do it!!

We laughed and she cried (well…I have to admit, I cried just a little too…not boohoo, just a silent tear or two).

The mostly older baby boomer audience sang on the more familiar Abba tunes and we did too.

If you enjoyed the first movie, I believe you’ll like this one too, so I recommend you go.

Early in the movie, young Donna made a remark that I immediately pulled out my pad and wrote down.

Donna said;
“Life is short, the world is wide, let’s go make some memories.”

Love it...so true!!

There’s not much you’re going to take with you, so go make some memories.

Why not right away.

You deserve it and you’ll be glad you did!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…Mark

P.S. Last week, I mentioned that it was my birthday and I received such an overwhelming response that I have not had the opportunity to personally respond with a kind thank-you to everyone! That WAS worth crying over...so if you did not receive a personal email from me, please except this as my warm thank-you with my deepest gratitude! Even taking a few moments of your time to wish me a kind word is more than I could have ever hoped for...

THANKS...THANKS...THANKS!!!!!!!
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/53858242018-07-25T15:35:00-04:002018-08-13T17:34:11-04:00July 25, 2018 – In the End…Trust Wins!
But then, you might also say;

In the Beginning…Trust Wins…

Trust

noun
1. reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing
2. confident expectation of something; hope

verb
1. to have trust or confidence in; rely or depend on
2. to believe to expect confidently; hope

Trust creates a beginning.

Loss of trust becomes the end.

If you want to win…in leadership…in sales…in partnerships…in love, SUCCESS begins or ends with trust.

The world needs more trust, and it begins with YOU!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking!...Mark

P.S. Today is my Birthday (thank-you for thinking I don’t look 62). My birthday wish for YOU is that you’re the most trusted person in your circle and YOU are the person they can always count on!
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/53858252018-07-18T15:35:00-04:002020-10-15T02:05:49-04:00July 18, 2018 – YOUR Flaxen Cords
Flaxen cord is a thin yellow string similar to a tread of twine.

Bind your hands with a simple strand and you can easily breakaway.

Wrap instead with several loops and you can become incapacitated.

This flaxen cord analogy is easily compared to our habits.

We can become free of a few bad habits.

But, bad habits compounded will freeze us from positive ACTION.

William James referred to each of us as “walking bundles of habits.”

The English writer, Samuel Johnson once said;

“The chains of habit are to small to be felt until they are too strong to be broken.”

There’s an old Spanish Proverb that goes; “Habits are at first cobwebs, then cables.”

Charles A. Hall once aptly pronounced;

“We sow our thoughts, and we reap our actions. We sow our actions, and we reap our habits. We sow our habits, and we reap our characters. We sow our characters, and we reap our destiny.”

Take a close look at your habits today.

The good ones…keep.

But maybe…it’s time to eliminate some of those bad ones.

Today’s a great day to start!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/53858262018-07-11T15:40:00-04:002018-08-13T17:37:21-04:00July 11, 2018 – The Lesson of the Mangrove Tree
Gigi and I took a fun tour recently of beautiful Key West that also turned out to be educational.

On the tour, our guide stopped to let us get up close and personal to a mangrove tree.

As it turns out, mangroves are the only trees known to live and grow while absorbing salt water.

Unlike fresh water trees, the mangrove tree has a unique ability to separate the salt from the water.

The mangrove does this through a sacrificial yellow leaf that collects the salt from the salt water and sends the newly unsalted water to the rest of the tree feeding and nourishing it.

This sacrificial leaf is then released from the tree for a new leaf to grow, collect salt and be sacrificed…and the cycle continues.

Interesting isn’t it?

Mother Nature is wondrous.

And yet…so are we.

When we choose be unselfish, electing to serve others and sacrifice for others rather than be focused only on our own personal needs, that’s when miracles happen, both for those we serve and also for ourselves.

We all want to succeed.

We all want to be happy.

But….the more we give, the more we get…and the cycle continues.

I’m sure you are already good at it, so this Minute…is probably just for me!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/53858272018-07-04T15:40:00-04:002018-08-13T17:39:00-04:00July 4, 2018 – YOUR Price for Freedom
On this day, July 4, I wish you a joyous and Freedom filled life!

What a blessing that I pray we shall never take for granted.

In tribute, may I share the words of several of our founding fathers:

“You will never know how much it cost my generation to preserve YOUR freedom. I hope you will make a good use of it.” John Adams

“The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” Thomas Jefferson

“What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated.” Thomas Paine

And let us not forget the words of Frederick Douglas…

"I have said that the Declaration of Independence is the ring-bolt to the chain of your nation’s destiny; so, indeed, I regard it. The principles contained in that instrument are saving principles. Stand by those principles, be true to them on all occasions, in all places, against all foes, and at whatever cost."

May everyday be as sacred and special to all of us as is the 4th of July!!

It’s simple to create fun days.

But joy…real joy…emotional joy…only comes on rare days.

Last weekend…I had two of those joy filled days.

On Friday, our family celebrated the wedding of our youngest.

Kerri married a wonderful young man (Dylan Starns) for time and all eternity!

On Saturday, we had the reception in our back yard in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

I wish you could have been there…I was smiling all evening like I was on some kind of drugs (I was actually….joy drugs)!

We all seek joy.

We all deserve occasional joy.

It shouldn’t come everyday or joy just wouldn’t feel like joy.

But when it comes…it’s amazing!!

I wish you a bunch.

As often as possible.

For me…. I’d like some more real soon…but for now…I think

I’m good at least until next month when our son Chase gets married to Bonnie.

So, please join me and go find some joy… you’ve earned it!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/53071462018-06-13T13:15:00-04:002018-06-20T15:12:39-04:00June 13, 2018 – YOU Being a Franchise Player
I’m not sure if you’re an NBA fan, but if you are, you more than likely watched the NBA Championship games last week between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors.

Golden State fans have to be ecstatic that they won it all in just 4 games while Cleveland fans were left disappointed and wondering if they’ll even be back in the fight next year.

Why?

Because much of the conversation after the series has not been about the stellar performance of the Golden State Warrior players, but rather if Labron James, Cleveland’s “Franchise Player” will be back next year.

In professional sports, a franchise player is an athlete who is not simply the best player on their team, but one that the team can build their "franchise" around for the foreseeable future.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see what Labron chooses to do, but in the meantime, we have a much more important question…

Are YOU the franchise player for your team?

Are YOU the franchise player for your company?

Are YOU the franchise player for your family?

You could be.

You should be!

The world needs YOU to be.

We’re surrounded by people that are satisfied with being on the team, maybe even playing in the game, but they aren’t maximizing their potential to the point that SUCCESS is created because of them.

Being a franchise player isn’t all about ego.

It’s rather about performing at a very high level.

You CAN do that.

I hope you do!

YOU can make a real difference in the lives of others and then in many ways...the world.

Go to it…today’s a great day to play…and win!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…Mark

P.S. if you have an event coming up in the fall or sometime next year that you’ll need a keynote speaker or breakout session teacher, I’d love to be considered. Please pass my name along to your company, association, leadership team, or group. It is always my pleasure to serve and I’d surely appreciate your kindness!!
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/52880412018-06-06T20:05:00-04:002018-06-10T22:03:33-04:00June 6, 2018 – Participate!
One of the greatest and simplest tools for creating a life of wonder is just to participate.

Get More Involved!

When you’re involved, you learn more.

If you want to learn more, become an eager participator.

Plunge in. Embrace new experiences. Partake of all your life has to offer.

I love how Mel Books described the challenge we all sometimes have when he said;

“Look, I really don’t want to wax philosophic, but I will say that if you’re alive, you got to flap your arms and legs, you got to jump around a lot, you got to make a lot of noise, because life is the very opposite of death. And therefore, as I see it, if you’re quiet, you’re not living. You’ve got to be noisy, or at least your thoughts should be noisy and colorful and lively.”
So go be a little more noisy and colorful and lively…at least for today."

You might just be amazed what will happen when you full out participate!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/52703292018-05-30T12:20:00-04:002018-06-01T14:19:48-04:00May 30, 2018 – 4 Steps to Leaving a GREAT Impression
Nearly everyone you know wants to be liked.

Nearly everyone you know wants to be included.

If that’s you too (and I bet it is), you’d likely be interested in the 4 emotions that will guarantee a lasting positive impression.

1. Fun = making people smile or laugh creates an immediate and lasting good impression.

2. Trust = your body language, facial expressions, attentiveness, concern and empathy all play a part in showing you are a good and trustworthy person.

3. Respect = A 15 Harvard study shows that care tops competence when creating influence. Asking good questions and really listening will go a long long way to creating the impression you want.

4. Show sincere interest = Not to touchy and not to gooey.

Show the right amount of kindness, care and appropriate love and they’ll be impressed and you'll be remembered.

Influence will only happen when you make and leave the right impression.

It might take a little thought and a lot of practice, but leaving that positive lasting impression pays huge dividends.

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/52703282018-05-23T12:20:00-04:002018-06-01T14:18:34-04:00May 23, 2018 – Taking the Friction Out of Life
How do you take the friction out of life…with kindness.

kind•ness noun
The quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.
synonyms: kindliness, kindheartedness, warmheartedness, affection, warmth, gentleness, concern, care

Mark Twain once said… “Kindness is the language the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”

Aesop shared… “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”

Dalai Lama vocalized… “My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.”

Albert Schweitzer voiced… “Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate.”

Joseph B Wirthlin pronounced… “Kindness is a passport that opens doors and fashions friends. It softens hearts and molds relationships that can last lifetimes.”

“Kindness is the oil that takes the friction out of life.”

If you only exercise one superior quality today, choose kindness.

You won’t regret it!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/52391002018-05-16T21:28:15-04:002020-01-20T04:09:17-05:00May 16, 2018 – Get Off Your But…s
We all have tough times.

We all have challenges.

Some days we all want to stay in bed and pull the covers over our head.

But…we need to remove the but…s in our lives.

We could succeed, but…we’re not smart enough.

We could compete, but…we don’t have enough education.

We could win, but…we just need another chance.

You get the point.

I listened to a wonderful interview recently with Sean Stephenson and loved his spirit.

If you think you’ve ever had a tough challenge, look him up on Google.

No more but…s!

Here’s Sean’s 3 Steps to help us get off our but…s.

1. Get the right tools – Want to improve your health, wealth or relationships? Sean says the answers to our questions are as close as the nearest library.

2. Surround yourself with the right people – Sean says we all need three kinds of people. Friendtors = people that really know us and care about us / Mentors = people that will tell us the truth (could include a paid coach) / Advocates = people want to open doors for us and help us succeed.

3. A When Life Works list – all the things we did to create those magic moments in our lives = write down exactly what you did to create the moment to include all purposeful actions. By writing a list, you have a much better chance of recreating those times over and over in your life.

Nobody wins when they settle for but…s.

Don’t let that be you.

I already know you’re better than that!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/52391072018-05-09T19:30:00-04:002018-05-16T21:31:02-04:00May 9, 2018 – Winners Never Quit – That’s YOU!
I love the story told by Harvey Mackay about a high school basketball coach who was attempting to motivate his players to persevere through a difficult season.

Halfway through the season, the coach stood before his team and said;

“Did Michael Jordan ever quit?”

The team responded “NO!”

He yelled, “What about the Wright Brothers? Did they ever give up?”

“No!” hollered back the team.

“Did Muhammad Ali ever quit?”

Again the team yelled, “No!”

“Did Elmer McAllister ever quit?”

There was a long silence.

Finally one player was bold enough to ask, “Who’s Elmer McAllister coach? We’ve never heard of him.”

The coach snapped back, “Of course you never heard of him…he quit!”

Life is the same for us.

It’s often just after we quit that the miracles would begin to happen.

So, when you know it’s right….don’t quit!

Our world is so much fuller when we live in it without regrets.

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking….Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/52178242018-05-02T15:50:00-04:002018-05-04T17:49:13-04:00May 2, 2018 – Life is Not Always Fair
Life is not always fair when it passes out natural gifts like looks or talent, athleticism or wit, common sense or social skills…but no one was left out or was ever born without the potential for determination and character.

You may be at a disadvantage on a few things, but your depth of character and your potential for success are maximized only by your willingness to stretch, grow and exert a mighty effort.

New York Yankee great Mickey Mantle had a response for the critics who pointed out he had struck out a whopping 1,710 times in the course of his career.

Mickey’s response:

“They may be just strikeouts to some people, but to me every one was nearly a home run!”

I’ve never met anyone that got it right every time and I bet YOU haven’t either.

As French author Jules Renard once said;

“There are moments when everything goes well; don’t be frightened, it won’t last!”

Challenges help us achieve so don’t ever let negative self talk sabotage your success.

I believe you have the ability to slide safely into home plate.

If you’re determined I know you will, and I’m just one of a bunch of people that are rooting for you!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/52178002018-04-25T15:35:00-04:002018-05-04T17:34:00-04:00April 25, 2018 – YOUR Big 3 Goals
What would be YOUR Big 3 Goals if you took the time to identify them?

If you already have, what are you doing to make each of them become a reality?

This may sting a little, but I believe “there’s nothing more useless than a goal not acted upon”.

So…..get on with it!

What’s one thing you could do every day to make those goals happen?

You’re likely only one key behavior away from making that goal a reality.

Track those positive behaviors…..be constantly conscious.

There’s a big difference between people that dream and people that achieve and there’s nothing stopping you from being an achiever.

I love what Jim Rohn once said…. "The same wind blows on us all….the difference in success…the set of your sails.”

We’re only a quarter way through the year and lots can still happen, so go get what is rightfully yours.

You deserve all of it!

If that’s true for you, it’s time to change the channel.

Don’t let all that garbage in.

Just like a computer can ingest a virus, your brain can get one too.

And to succeed, your software has to work at its highest levels.

If your input is not what it should be, make that change and fill your brain with better stuff.

Don’t ever let simple thinking, unhealthy habits, stressful situations or people that don’t really matter limit your success.

Casualness leads to casualties.

Don’t you be one.

Get with it...I'm always rooting for your success and I know I'm not alone in my cheers!

But what about the times when you’re not really 100% sure, and a “maybe” will have to do?

“Fuzzy Logic” is then the application of determining “degrees of truth”.

Here are a couple examples;

What do you do when you want to believe, and you think you believe, but your brain and your heart just won’t be certain that you deeply believe?

What should you do when you know you’ve on to something big, but you’re afraid the world (or your partners, best friend, or your wife or…..) will resist? Maybe they’ll even call you a little crazy!

What could you do if you learn something new and you know you should do it, but you’re not quite sure exactly how to get started?

That’s where “fuzzy logic” steps in.

Take a chance!

Get committed!!

Go for the gusto!!!

You don’t always have to obtain “sure knowledge” of everything.

You don’t have to always over evaluate and miss the opportunity.

“Fuzzy Logic” is the catalyst for world and life changing ideas, strategies, products and services.

Let’s all get a little “Fuzzy” this week.

If you do, your world might just take a dynamic and positive turn that will thrust you to even bigger opportunities and accomplishments!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…..Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/51651102018-04-04T23:57:11-04:002018-04-04T23:57:11-04:00April 4, 2018 – Are YOU Striking Oil?
I heard recently that it only takes us one or two dozen truly connected people to achieve the level of success we are seeking.

Not 1000 or 2000.

The key is in fostering real relationships.

Magic comes from delivering those few more Ohhhh’s and Ahhh’s rather than just O’s and I’s.

You can’t strike oil being a mile wide and an inch deep.

Connection and communication are very different.

You’ll achieve your desired success when you grow from just me to we!

Don’t make the mistake of thinking social media replaces emotion.

There’s no narrative in a 15 second post.

If you want to strike oil, find your vital few, know them deep, then deliver real value.

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…….Mark

Leaders inspire…..not for a day, but for years to come.

I bet you could name several people right now that were a true inspiration to you, a Trust Based Leader you follow or would follow again.

And I’d also wager that you could name a person or two that had the title of leader, but did not understand what is required to actually lead.

If you choose to become (or continue to be) the definition of a Trust Based Leader, here are four ways you can do it;

1. Managers push people to perform but Leaders have a “Vision” for the future = Be responsible for the success of the organization by clarifying the future then inspiring people to join with you in creating it.

2. Lead by example = People are watching your every move. Inspire them by your actions and your example and take immediate responsibility for your failures.

3. Be a spokesperson they can be proud of =Trust Based Leaders read and Trust Based Leaders speak…boldly and proudly, but humbly…and never ever speak arrogantly. Impress your followers with deep knowledge, understanding, empathy and a commitment to always doing and saying what’s right. That includes both private and public presentations.

4. Train your replacement = It’s important to have the right people on the bus in the right seats, but it’s equally important to prepare your company or your organization (or your family) for your departure = no matter how smart or healthy or wise you are, you won’t live forever in THIS life. Inspire and train someone that can replace you!

Trust Based Leaders lead by example, with integrity and with wisdom.

If you’re not already, become a Trust Based Leader……this world really needs you!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…….Mark

Many of us are hoping that some light will shine on our problems.

In life, we seek the “light at the end of the tunnel”.

In death, we refer to actually “walking towards the light”.

When we have an idea, we often say, “I’ve seen the light”.

The truth is that we are drawn to light.

If we are lucky, we find the light.

You can be the light for someone today.

Share a smile, offer a kind gesture.

Serve someone, listen to their problem.

If you really want to solve YOUR problem, start by listening to someone else’s.

To have light, give light.

I know you will, cause’ even if you don’t feel light sometimes, you’ve already got the light within you!

Several days prior to the event, and as I walked in our home and through the kitchen from a program I had been speaking at, I reached out my hand to our guest assistant to introduce myself.

She took my hand, and with a puzzled look simply said…….”You’ve never worked a day in your life, have you?”

I was a little shocked and put off by her surprising response…..but then…..her perspective is her reality and I just moved on through the kitchen and shut the door to my office behind me.

I’ve joked with Gigi many times about that comment and what it is I really do, and that is……..think for a living!

In today’s world, we’re drowning in information but desperate for direction.

We’re overloaded with data, but unable to figure out what it all means.

We’re bombarded with images and messages that tell us nothing.

We’re stuck in corporate structures in which numbers and facts endlessly multiply but good ideas never see the light of day.

I could be wrong, but what I believe is that the world needs more people who think for a living…….then……actually do something with it.

YOU are that person!

And if you don’t think you currently are, become one.

The world needs people that can think and then take positive action.

Today’s a great day to start………why not go think awhile this morning and take positive action this afternoon.

YOU can do it…….I know you can!

I believe we’ve only scratched the service of knowledge and accomplishment.

Now if you’re not sure you agree with me, just think back on your own life and how things have changed.

It’s been proven over and over that the world makes way for people who know where they’re going (think Amazon Prime, Red Box, Lyft or Uber, and Airbnb).

So, what does it take for new success……?

Creative Pioneers!

Creative pioneers have vision, imagination and courage.

Through vision, they will see things as they REALLY are.

Through imagination, they will dream deeply of things that CAN be.

Through courage, they will act boldly to make their dreams come TRUE.

So why not make yourself one of the creative pioneers.

We’ve lived our entire adult lives trying faithfully to serve our family and provide a healthy and happy life for them.

And with that effort has come hundreds of requests for loving assistance from our gaggle of a family (I mean that in a humorous and good way).

So here’s one of the many things I have learned…..If you want something you have to ask for it!

Jack Canfield wrote about this very same principle a while back and here are his 5 tips for getting started on getting what you want;

1. Ask as though you actually expect to get it.

2. Assume you can. Don’t start with the assumption that you

can’t get what you want.

3. Ask someone who can give it to you or at least help you get it.

4. Be specific about what you want. Vague requests produce vague results.

5. Ask repeatedly but not obnoxiously. Persistence is a key principle to success.

I love the clarity of Jack’s simple process.

Decide what you want, then ask for it.

How about try it today……why not right now! You might just get it……

Over the years, it has also become obvious that along with these events, it’s important to participate in Mastermind Groups.

Last December while attending and speaking briefly at an event in Los Angeles, I met Kyle Wilson.

You may not know Kyle and I had only heard of him, but Kyle Wilson was the marketing brains behind master motivators and speakers like Jim Rohn, Darren Hardy, Brian Tracy, Robin Sharma and many others.

Recently, Kyle posted a list of 10 Reasons Why Masterminds Work.

I thought it was worth sharing with you:

1) When you spend the day with like minded people, it makes you better. You play up. Synergy!

2) You always walk away with ideas and strategies (often times outside the box) that you can apply to life and business.

3) You meet amazing people (members and guests).

4) Your thinking gets expanded.

5) You feel a part of a community (an amazing community).

6) You get to be around world class experts.

7) There are shared values and philosophy.

8) You ALWAYS come away refreshed and renewed.

9) Your associations and network are expanded.

10) You get to share your knowledge and wisdom with others.

2018 would be a great year for you to join or organize a Mastermind group and you should consider it a wise priority if you’re trying to increase your business, grow your network or expand your knowledge.

They’ve worked for everyone I’ve ever talked with that took them seriously and it would work for you too….it might just help you create some miracles!

Bad things happen to good people.

But……when they’re determined, good people overcome bad things.

How do they do it?

Recently, I wrote a new thought in my little book which goes….

“Through dedicated focus and forgiveness, weak things become strong.” Mark Given

It’s only through conscious effort that we overcome our significant challenges.

In a 2012 Huffington blog post, Linda Durnell said:

“I believe each of us has an innate capacity for strength and throughout our lives, we develop — through conditions we find ourselves in — the skills to be secure, passionate, formidable and determined.”

It’s only through difficult challenges that we grow, so when bad things happen to you……refocus.

Now you may have had enough bad things happen that you’re starting to feel like you should be a giant, so if that’s you…….look down on us little people and give us your hand.

The world will benefit from your knowledge and wisdom, but only if you reach down and pull us up!

The article relates to YOU and YOUR handshake.

You probably already know this, but your handshake reveals a lot about the type of person you are.

In fact, your handshake can even tell a lot about how your day is going.

According to Dr. Lillian Glass, PhD, a renowned body language expert based in Beverly Hills, California there are many types of handshakes.

Dr. Glass has studied and identified the dominant handshake, the limp handshake, the politician’s handshake, the rushed handshake, the look away handshake, the lingering handshake, the intense glare handshake and the perfect handshake.

I bet you already know the one that will best serve you, so take a few minutes today, open the article I’ve attached and learn important skills to improve your initial introduction and enhance your trust.

Who knows, you might just see a new way of doing things!

The force that seems to operate for good or ill in a person's life, as in shaping circumstances, events, or opportunities:
With some luck I can probably avoid pneumonia.
2. Good fortune; advantage or success, considered as the result of chance:
I’m lucky to have found this opportunity.
3. Combination of circumstances, events, etc., operating by chance to bring good or ill to a person:

She's had nothing but good luck all year.
4. Some object on which good fortune is supposed to depend:
This rabbit's foot is what brings me luck.

verb
5. luck into /onto, to meet, acquire, become, etc., by good luck:
She lucked into a great job that was perfect for her abilities.
6. luck out, to have an instance or run of exceptionally good luck:
He was wonderfully lucky when he made a hole in one during the golf tournament.
7. luck upon, to come across by chance:
He lucked upon a profitable investment that really made a difference.

Have you had a run of uncommon luck?

Of course you have!

You probably have respectable health for your age.

You likely have had the opportunity to make a few positive things happen in your life.

I bet you have a little money in your pocket and in the bank.

Chances are you have a comfortable home.

I’d be willing to wager you have more people that love you than don’t.

In this world of seven and a half billion people, you’re pretty darn lucky.

In fact, I’d say you are uncommonly lucky.

And what should you do when you’re uncommonly lucky?

However it happened, I got him from the start and knew if I wanted to succeed in business and life I should listen.

Doing that has made a mighty difference.

Great teachers do that and I’m sure glad I got to see him live

before he left us.

So, in tribute, here are some of my favorite Zig Ziglar quotes;

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”

“Among the things you can give and still keep are your word, a smile, and a grateful heart.”

“If you go out looking for friends, you’re going to find they are very scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you’ll find them everywhere.”

“You were born to win, but to be a winner you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.”

“The greatest of all mistakes is to do nothing because you think you can only do a little.”

“Motivation gets you going and habit gets you there.”

and……

“You can have everything in your life that you want if you’ll just help enough other people get what they want.”

RIP Zig. We’re still learning from you!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…….Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/50185162018-01-10T09:50:00-05:002018-01-11T11:48:44-05:00January 10, 2018 – 7 Resolutions for Success in 2018
I’m traveling to speak and teach all this week, so that of course includes several hotel nights.

It’s funny that only when I travel do I read an actual newspaper (mostly USA Today), and very early this morning I read a short article by Rhonda Abrams that is worth sharing.

Here’s Rhonda’s “Seven Resolutions for Success in 2018” with my added thoughts;

1. Find a good accountant – she’s right…..with the new tax laws you’ll need some help getting all your legal deductions. A

good accountant will pay dividends!

2. Focus – I always preach this and 2018 is just like every year. Get focused on what you really want, write it down and get to work. Miracles are coming your way my friend!

3. Contain clutter – accomplishing #2 is hard when you’re surrounded by piles of paper and junk.

4. Go on a digital diet – turn off all those electronics for just 15 – 30 minutes a day, find your favorite thinking space. You’ll accomplish more and create the success in your life and business you are seeking.

5. Automate what you can – and I’m going to add, get some help doing those important but mundane things that have to be done, but NOT BY YOU.

6. Get out of launch mode – 2018 is the perfect time to stop planning and start doing!

7. Develop a business plan – you don’t need a polished written document, but you do need to sit down and develop your plan for success then write it down.

2018 is going to be a fantastic year so go find your miracles.

You deserve all of them!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…….Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/50058642018-01-03T21:01:12-05:002018-01-03T21:01:12-05:00January 3, 2018 – Comfort….the Hindrance of Progress
Last night, I escorted Momma Evie (my 90 yr old mother), Gigi (my beautiful bride of 40 years) and Kerri (our 24 yr old baby girl) to the movie, The Greatest Showman.

We really loved it, so if you haven’t seen the movie and enjoy musicals, you absolutely should go.

Hugh Jackman and the entire cast are terrific, the music is toe tapping, the costumes beautiful and the cinematography is wonderful.

The movie is only loosely based on P.T. Barnum’s actual life, but I was reminded of some principles that are true to this day.

And…..there were some memorable lines to learn from.

Here’s one;

“Comfort….the hindrance of progress.”

I’ve seen that over and over in my life.

When I get too comfortable, I get lazy.

The lesson?

It’s the beginning of a new year.

If you haven’t set your sights on new projects and achievements for 2018 and written them down, it’s time to stop what you’re doing and do it. DO IT RIGHT NOW!

2018 can be your best year yet and you deserve it. You actually deserve ALL OF IT!

I’m rooting for you and would love to hear your biggest goal.

So get to work making it happen…..I'm just one of the people rooting for you!!!

Here we are again….a new year!

How in the world does the time go by so fast?

Sometime back, I shared my 4 steps to creating the success you are seeking.

1. Decide what you want
2. Create a plan (your mission)
3. Estimate the cost (there is always a cost = both financial and time)
4. Don’t let anything deter you from accomplishing YOUR mission (someone or something will always try to stop you)

This plan seems simple but most people don’t get past #1.

But, that’s not YOU.

2018 is going to be an awesome year.

Go get what YOU deserve and be outstanding!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and I’ll see you in 2018........Mark .

“The most important gifts at Christmas are not presents, but presence.”

I concur.

Hope you are planning a wonderful Christmas or no matter how you celebrate the holiday season, I hope for you that it is joyous.

Just like you, I’m blessed and grateful.

Throughout this year, I have appreciated your presence and that my friend, is a wonderful present.

I thank-you!

Smiles, have a GREAT Christmas and Keep on Seeking…..Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/49753452017-12-13T13:11:39-05:002017-12-13T13:11:39-05:00Dec 13, 2017 – YOU Being Right VS. YOU Being Kind
Gigi, my lovely bride of 40 years and I went to see the movie “Wonder” a couple weeks ago and I could not help but tear up a couple of times.

If you haven’t seen it and you have a kind heart, I highly recommend it.

About a third of the way through, I just had to pull the little pad out of my pocket and write down a "wonder"ful quote.

“If you have a choice between being right or kind, be kind.”

Love it!!

That quote reminded me of something Ian MacLaren once said:

“Be kind for everyone you meet is carrying a heavy burden.”

And it’s true; everyone has something they are struggling with.

Given the opportunity, we should help them.

My friend, Daniel Smith said to me recently:

“The key to success is love….it’s true for business and life.”

And I would add:

“The distance between having wisdom and experiencing joy is about 14 inches…that's the distance between your head and your heart.”

It’s Christmas time again.

Let us all go and use our wisdom by creating some joy.

If we do, we’ll be both right and kind!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…..Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/49753002017-12-06T10:55:00-05:002017-12-13T13:12:58-05:00Dec 6, 2017 – 10 Things Like-able NEVER Do
I read an interesting article recently by Jeff Haden in an Inc. blog that I thought you might like and with 2018 coming quickly, it might be a good time to write them down and add some to your To Improve List for the coming year.

10 Things Like-able People Never Do

1. They don’t blame
2. They don’t control
3. They don’t try so hard to impress
4. They are careful about being too clingy
5. They don’t interrupt
6. They don’t whine
7. They don’t criticize
8. They don’t preach
9. They don’t live in the past
10. They don’t let fear hold them back

So……what do you think?

I can use some improvement on #5, #7 and #10.

In fact, why wait until January 1st.

I think I’ll start RIGHT NOW!!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking….Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/49633162017-11-29T10:25:00-05:002020-09-23T07:30:09-04:00Nov 29, 2017 - Take That Old Record Off The Shelf
I’m not sure about you, but I don’t read the same books I did as a teen.

I don’t watch the same TV shows.

I surely don’t wear the same polyester clothes.

So why is it that my early musical preferences still linger? (I bet yours do too)

It’s all about nostalgia says Petr Janata, PhD of the Center for Mind and Brain at the University of California, Davis.

Nostalgia is a positive emotion.

Nostalgia boosts our sense that life has meaning.

Nostalgia makes us more optimistic about the future and it fosters a stronger sense of connection to others.

Dr Janata says that the music of our youth is intertwined with memories of key events that occurred and brings us joy.

So break out those old 8 tracks, or cassettes, or 45 records, or albums, or maybe even a CD.

For me….take that old record off the shelf…how about you?

It’s all good and should brighten a difficult day!

Thanks for watching my Mark's Minutes on YouTube.

Thanks for sharing them with your company, your friends and those you care about.

Thanks for making my life better because I know you.

Thanks, thanks, thanks for bringing joy in my life for allowing me the opportunity to share!!

I'm grateful for a lot of things and that includes YOU!!

Smiles, have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Keep on Seeking...Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/49391742017-11-15T20:20:00-05:002017-12-13T13:17:43-05:00Nov 15, 2017 - Friendly Sets You Apart
I really like and agree with what Jeffrey Gitomer shared in his blog this week about choosing friendly service over delivering service with an attitude.

I’ve taken the liberty to add a little personal interpretation that fits my own experience.

Jeffrey said:

Friendly service is a difference and it leads to other differences. Most people who are friendly tend to be more helpful, more empathetic, more accommodating, more engaging, and better, or should I say "way better," at serving.

It's their pleasure to serve. Not their JOB to serve.

But here's the problem: (Well, it's not a problem; it's more of a dilemma Jeffrey said.) Once you've had the best service in the best places, it's hard to take a backwards step.

In the world of Mark Given, all things being equal, once you've stayed at a Hilton, it's hard to go back and stay at a Holiday Inn Express. And once you've stayed at one of the Gaylord Hotels, it's hard to go back to a Hilton.

The cool thing is that there are places better than any Gaylord, we just don’t get to experience those often (if ever).

The point is….the people serving me at a Gaylord nearly always appear to be happily engaged and friendly and much more so than the people serving me in their job at a Holiday Inn Express.

The lesson though is that when I get really friendly and engaged people at a Holiday Inn their stock goes up. At least in my mind and I’ll return again and again (or at least until they mess it up – there’s not as much room for error at a Holiday Inn).

Like everyone, you understand there’s a difference in a brand, but I also believe that just like me, you buy friendly and that applies in both business and life.

So…….how friendly will YOU be…….today, tomorrow, next week and next month to everyone you encounter?

Job may pay the bills but friendly will make your life comfortable, profitable and a joy to live!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…….Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/49391622017-11-08T20:15:00-05:002017-12-13T13:18:05-05:00Nov 8, 2017 – When More Is Said Than Done
Jim Rohn once said;

“Your philosophy is the greatest determining factor in how your life works out.”

So if you accept that as true…..what is YOUR philosophy?

Are you all about health, or joy, or money, or family, or sharing, or trust, or are you a composite of many good things?

Life is about timing and success is more than a good idea.

I think I’m just like you…..so when all is said and done, I want

more to be done than said.

That’s a good philosophy!

Smiles, have a GREAT week and Keep on Seeking…….Mark
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/49165312017-10-25T11:35:00-04:002017-11-02T13:54:50-04:00Oct 25, 2017 – Don’t YOU Be a Fire Hose
After helping my wonderful wife raise 5 terrific children, try desperately to be an awesome grandfather to our 6 grandchildren and travel the world speaking and teaching a good portion of the past 15 years, I’ve learned a valuable lesson about sharing and then hoping someone was listening and learning.

“Don’t be a fire hose….be a sprinkler!”

People learn, understand and remember better line upon line, precept upon precept…drip…drip…drip.

The funny thing though is when you ask people what they want; they’ll tell you to fire hose them every time.

But when you oblige….little will be absorbed.

Herbert Spencer once said;

“The great aim of education is not knowledge but ACTION!”

Be a sprinkler rather than a fire hose and you’ll improve the chances someone will actually sprout.

Statistics are in my favor too, so I guarantee it!
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/49165302017-10-18T11:35:00-04:002020-08-26T03:37:56-04:00Oct 18, 2017 – Relationships are the Currency of the Wealthy
Money is not the only currency of life.

In fact, you can be equally rich in health, happiness, joy, spirituality and relationships.

I find it interesting that wealth actually comes as a product of our habits.

And even though most people spend their life chasing it, real wealth success comes best and fastest by attracting it.

A new friend of mine shared a quote by Tom Corley that I just love;

“Relationships are the currency of the wealthy.”

I looked up Tom Corley. He studies wealth and here is what he has found:

88% of the wealthy believe relationships are a key factor in their wealth. Only 17% of the poor agree.
75% of the rich send thank you cards or notes or email regularly. Only 13% of the poor have this Rich Habit.
72% of the wealthy volunteer five hours or more each month compared to only 12% for the poor.

So if you’re seeking more wealth, get out there and attract it.

Be more visible, show more gratitude, thank people more often, serve more and give more.

When you do, you won’t be able to stop the blessings from coming your way.

I recall something in a valuable book that relates this principle to “windows”!
Mark Giventag:markgiven.com,2005:Post/49165352017-10-11T11:40:00-04:002017-11-02T13:49:23-04:00Oct 11, 2017 – Quit Picking That Wound
In southern vernacular, “Sometimes life just don’t go the way you planned, no matter how much planning you planned”.

So, if yesterday or the day before was that day, remember….

Disappointment is inevitable, misery is optional.

Shake it off.

Change the channel.

Let it go.

Quit picking that wound.

Get back to focusing on the things you CAN control.

It’s gonna’ heal in time if you let it.

Let it!
