What Is Your USP?

Like it or not, you sell. Everybody sells.

You sold your uniqueness to your spouse or your upcoming date.

You sell your kids, your grand kids, or your nieces and nephews on the reasons they should clean their room, brush their teeth, and do their homework.

You sell your colleagues or your boss or your teacher on a great idea or system.

You sell yourself on why it’s a good idea to eat that donut!

And maybe, just maybe, you are actually one of the nine Americans that actually call themselves a professional sales person.

So then, have you considered your USP? Your Unique Selling Proposition?

Theodore Levitt, a professor at Harvard Business School, suggested that your USP is what differentiates you from the competition.

“Differentiation is one of the most important strategic and tactical activities in which companies and individuals must constantly engage.”

The term also describes your “personal brand”

The world may be getting flat, but don’t mistake the reality that to succeed, to make a dent in the world, you have to be noticed.

If you want to make a positive difference, develop your USP, then make sure everybody that will listen engages.

You may not make the cover of Time magazine, but you can leave the legacy you intended.
